Advent Candlelit Mass – Thursday at 7pm

There was a great turnout for our first Candlelit Mass last Thursday. It was a beautiful Mass. If you didn’t make it last week – why not come along this Thursday, bring your children and grandchildren, and pass the word around to your friends.  

Young Adult’s Group - Christmas Carol Service

On Tuesday 11th December there will be a lovely carol service in the Cathedral followed by mulled wine, mince pies etc. in the Café. All young adults (under 35) are very welcome.  

Carol Singing, Saturday 15 December

The Cathedral is organising carol singing at Victoria Manor Care Home on Saturday, 15 December at 2pm. This is a lovely way to spread some Christmas joy and is much appreciated by the residents. All welcome, please call 07943 691517 if you are interested and might be able to come along.

First Sunday of Advent - Year C

Advent Candlelit Mass – Thursday at 7pm

So, Advent begins today and with it our annual rushed preparation for Christmas. As previously, this year we will again have our lovely Candlelit Masses in the Cathedral on Thursdays as our way of preparing for the birth of the Lord. These Masses are quiet and beautiful and provide a real way to prepare spiritually for Christmas. Please come along this Thursday, bring your children and grandchildren, and pass the word around to your friends.

Welcome to the Mayor of Picinisco

Today at the 12noon Mass we welcome both the Parish Priest of Picinisco, Don Edmer Eronga and the Mayor of Picinisco, Sgr. Scappaticci. They are here with a delegation from the town to visit Edinburgh.

Cathedral Children’s Party 2018 – After 9am Mass 16th December

YOHOHO! They come to mass with you all year round… so it's with great pleasure that we announce that we will take them off your hands for a Christmas party! This will take place after the 9am mass on Sunday 16th December in the cathedral cafe area (oh no it won’t...oh yes it will)! There will be fun and games, a finger buffet for the children, a selection box and a visit from the big chap himself! If you would like your child to attend, then please give their names to the Lynn Mills or one of the children's liturgists at mass this weekend or to Deacon Peter. The last opportunity to register your interest will be on Sunday 9th of December to allow us to cater for the event.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe- Year B

St. Andrews Day – Next Friday

Next Friday, His Grace the Archbishop will celebrate Mass in the Cathedral at 12.45 to celebrate our National Patron. Also, to note that the relics of St. Andrew (which normally live in the St. Andrews altar) are on loan next week and will be displayed in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday.

 Fabric Matters in the Cathedral

Just to let you know that we have now replaced the third boiler for the Cathedral at a cost of £11,000. The CCTV is our next project and will happen in January next year. In the meantime, we have just been told that the humidifiers in the organ will need to be renewed at a cost of £4000. So, it’s all go on the fabric front! Many thanks to the small number of people who have handed in donations towards these costs over the last weeks. If you think you might be able to help with a donation towards the ongoing fabric repairs in the Cathedral please do speak either to me or to Caroline in the Finance office.

Archbishop’s Advent Catechesis – Every Sunday in Advent

The Archbishop is again inviting all young Adults in the Diocese to join him at 5pm on the Sundays of Advent at the Gillis Centre. Each week the Archbishop will lead a discussion which will be followed by a period of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament and and pizza!

George Weigel on Crisis in the Catholic Church – Saturday 8th December

On Saturday 8th December at 10.30am, the author and Catholic Commentator George Weigel will speak at the Cathedral Café on the subject: Crisis if the Catholic Church – How it happened and what it means for us? This will be an opportunity to discuss what is going on in the Church these days with someone who is both well informed and deeply insightful. It will be a stimulating conversation.

Rorate Masses – Every Thursday in Advent

Our beautiful and popular candlelit masses will be on the Thursdays of Advent this year. These are lovely occasions – do put them in your diary now and come along to prepare well for Christmas.

Rite of the Presentation of the Gospel – Next Sunday

Next Sunday we will welcome the children of P4, together with their parents and families, for a short Rite during the 9am Mass. I know that you will make them very welcome.

Justice and Peace Group – Monday 19th November

On Monday 19th Nov at 7.30pm in the Cathedral Café, Josh Littlejohn MBE will talk on the subject of Homelessness. Josh, who is the co-founder of Social Bite, organized the world’s biggest sleep-out event in 2017, Sleep in The Park, which raised £4m to reduce homelessness.

Parish Ceilidh – Saturday 17th November

Your last chance to purchase tickets for the Parish Ceilidh, priced £10 single or £20 families, including two drinks and finger food, is after all Masses this week. This is a great parish get together so please do come along and bring your families and friends.

Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

Collection of Christmas Gifts for Prisoners’ Children

It’s that time again, when the Children’s Liturgy Group, together with all the Parishioners of the Cathedral, collect gifts to be distributed to the children of the adults who are prisoners in Edinburgh (Saughton) Prison at Christmas. We ask that the gifts are new, wrapped in Christmas Gift wrap, and with a label attached stating whether the gift is suitable for a boy or a girl and the age of the child. Gifts for older children from 11 years onwards would be most appreciated. There will be a collection box in the Porch before all Masses for the depositing of gifts on 18th/19th and 24th/25th November. Please be as generous as you have been in past years. Thank you in advance!

Divine Mercy Holy Hour – Next Sunday at 3pm

The Divine Mercy prayer group will lead their monthly Holy Hour next Sunday at 3pm. All welcome.

Knowing Jesus Through Luke

On Saturday 17th November from 11am-3:30pm there will be a presentation on St Luke, a directed prayer session and a presentation on public reading at the Gillis Centre with Father Andrew Garden as the main speaker. Contact VECatechetics@staned.org.uk to book a place.

November Lists: Available at the Back of the Church

This year we are compiling a special, November ‘Book of Remembrance’ which will be placed before the altar, with prayers for the dead at the end of every Mass. If you’d like your own deceased friends and family to be remembered in this way, write down their names on the purple sheets available at the back

New Cathedral Choir – First Meeting on Wednesday at 7pm

Parish Ceilidh – Saturday 17th November

After the success of last year’s Parish Ceilidh, the social committee have organized another Ceilidh on 17th November. Tickets, priced £10 single or £20 families, including two drinks and finger food, will go on sale next week after all Masses. It’s a great evening and very popular. Do come along!

Church Cleaning Volunteers

As we hope you’ve noticed, our four cleaning groups have been meeting every week for the past year. Although they have made a big difference, we are seeking to recruit more volunteers. The groups meet on: Monday: 9am–11am; Wednesday: 2pm–4pm; Friday: 10am–12noon; Saturday: 10.30am – 2.30pm. Can you help at any of these sessions? Even if you cannot attend every week or stay the full two hours, helping once or twice per month would be greatly appreciated. Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

New Cathedral Choir for the 9:00am Sunday Mass

Michael Ferguson, our Musical Director, with the backing of the Parish Council has decided to launch a  new mixed-ability Cathedral Choir and he needs your help! Starting on Sunday 4th November, our new choir will sing weekly at the 9am Sunday Mass. Rehearsals will take place weekly on Wednesday evenings from 7-9pm. Come along and sing a wide range of liturgical music. Prior choir experience and music reading abilities are helpful, but not necessary! First meeting: Wednesday 31st October, 7-9pm in the Cathedral. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion – 22nd November

There will be an important meeting for all Communion Ministers on Thursday 22nd of November at 7.30pm in the Cathedral Café. This evening will offer spiritual formation and practical training for all those taking part in this important work. If you’re unable to attend, please speak to Fr Patrick or Fr Jamie. Likewise, if you know anyone who is unable to get to Mass and would like to receive Communion at home, please fill in a referral sheet available at the back of the church.

Preparing for the Year of Saint Luke

With the start of a new liturgical year upon the first Sunday of Advent we will embark upon Lectionary Cycle C and the Gospel of Saint Luke. To prepare ourselves, there will be a seminar day on the Gospel of Saint Luke on Saturday 17 November at the Gillis Centre from 11am to 3.30pm. The day will consist of a presentation on Saint Luke by Father Andrew Garden as well as directed prayer and a presentation on public reading. The event is open to both clergy and the lay faithful, especially those who are lectors or catechists. Those attending should bring a packed lunch. Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year B

October Devotions – This Evening at 5pm

This afternoon is the first in a series of Rosary Holy Hours for the month of October, from 5pm until 6pm at St Andrew’s, Ravelston. There will a time of quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, followed by a guided meditation on the Joyful mysteries of the Rosary and concluding with Benediction at 6pm. If you find the Rosary difficult or haven’t prayed it in a long time, this could be a great opportunity to give it another try!

 Young Adults’ Group – This Tuesday at 7pm

The next talk in our series on the Creed will be this Tuesday 9th of October in the Cathedral Café at 7pm. Fr David Howell, a recently ordained priest from the Archdiocese of Southwark, will give a talk on the Incarnation titled ‘I Believe in Jesus Christ, Born of the Virgin Mary,’ followed by Night Prayer and the pub. All young adults, 18-35, very welcome.

Aged & Infirm Clergy Fund – Special Collection Today

The Aged and Infirm Clergy Fund (‘AICF’) of the Archdiocese provides support for all of our retired priests with one of the main sources of income for the fund being the amounts received from the Special Collections.  Please remember to pray for those priests who have served us well and be as generous as you can. Gift Aid envelopes are already available at the back of the church. If you are a UK taxpayer, please consider gift aiding your donation by filling in the form on the back of one of these envelopes and using it when putting your donation into the collection basket.  Please note that gift aid relief can only be claimed if the back of the envelope has been completed.  As you know, using the gift aid envelopes in this way will uplift the amount that you give by a further 25% at no additional cost to you. For those of you using weekly envelopes, you may alternatively use the envelope in your set marked for the Aged and Infirm Clergy Fund to ensure that gift aid can be claimed on your donation. Thank you for your support.
