Short Talks on Prayer by Fr. Patrick

God seems to be calling all of us into a deeper and more real life of prayer. In order to help you, Fr Patrick offered a short series of 10-minute talks on prayer. Originally offered in Advent 2020, they are to help you deepen your relationship with The Lord throughout all seasons.

Set aside 10 minutes a day for silent prayer

Help me, O God, to put off all pretences and find my true self;
and help me to discard all false pictures of you, whatever the cost to my comfort.
— The short prayer recommended in the first talk

Set aside at least a few minutes as part of your spiritual exercises in prayer this week to be alone, in silence, with the Lord and say this prayer:

Help me O God to let go of all my problems and fix my mind on you. Help me to learn to be silent. And may the glory all be yours!
Amen.

A talk on prayer for the third week of Advent.

This week, Fr Patrick talks about when we feel our prayers are unanswered.

O Lord, I know not what to ask of you. You alone know what are my true needs. You love me more than I know how to love myself. Help me to see my real needs which are concealed from me. I do not ask either a cross or a consolation. I wait only on you. My heart is open for you. Visit and help me, for your great mercy’s sake. I worship in silence your holy will and your inscrutable ways. I put my trust in you. I have no other desire than to fulfil your will. Teach me how to pray. Pray you yourself in me.
Amen.”
