Ravelston Fabric Update

As part of our ongoing maintenance programme, the leak in the roof above the sanctuary has now been repaired; and the external window frames are in the process of being repainted, along with the entrance porch and sacristy. In approximately 6-8 weeks’ time, the new sanctuary curtains and associated changes should be ready to install, along with the new carpet. The sanctuary will then be a truly worthy home for the Lord. We are extremely grateful to the anonymous donor whose generosity has enabled these sanctuary improvements. Nearer the time, we will be looking for volunteers to assist with moving larger items off/on the carpeting – so watch this space!

Make Your Voice Heard: Abortion Services Bill to Be Debated in Holyrood

The Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Bill, tabled by Gillian MacKay MSP, will soon be debated in Holyrood. If the Bill is passed it will remove a lifeline for women who want to keep their babies but feel they have no other choice than abortion, and will introduce so-called buffer zones around abortion clinics, meaning that even silent prayer or witness would not be allowed. Anyone taking part in a pro-life vigil in Scotland would be subject to a six-month prison sentence for a first offence, and up to two years for subsequent breaches. Make your voice heard by contacting your Members of the Scottish Parliament. Use this easy webtool to email them: https://www.spuc.org.uk/nobufferzonesScotland

Searching for Jesus in the Gospel of Mark

As you all know, at the end of next month (23-27th October) Professor James Edwards will be visiting the parish to help us to get to know Jesus better, specifically through the Gospel of Mark. In order to prepare for this important event, each one of you has been given a prayer card today and I am asking you to join us (the Cathedral clergy) in praying each day for the success of this event – that many people will take this valuable opportunity to sit with the Lord and get to know Him better.

Please think about joining in in this event (you don’t have to come to the whole thing – although it will undoubtedly be better if you do!) and please think about spreading the word and inviting any friends or family who might be interested.

Sister Paul Miriam, RSM is a second-year novice and has been sent to assist Sister Miriam Ruth with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. They are both exited to serve the archdiocese. Sister Ilse, from the Netherlands, is a postulant with the community (one of a class of 11 postulants!) and will be traveling to the Motherhouse for her time there in preparation for entering the novitiate. Please pray for them and make sure to meet them!

A great time was had by all! Although we have collected in the majority of monies that were taken on the day, we are still collating final expenses and hope to confirm final figures next weekend for what was definitely a most successful and enjoyable afternoon!

Sign Up for Cathedral Big Clean on Saturday 30 September

Our volunteer cleaners and Marcin, our Sacristan, do a great job of keeping the Cathedral looking spic and span, but every so often it is helpful to have a deeper cleaner than they are able to manage with their limited time and manpower. To that end, we are holding our next Big Clean day on Saturday 30th September from 2 – 4 pm. It is a great way to work off a few calories, meet others and do something for our community. To get around the jobs on the list, we need 25 volunteers. If you felt able to volunteer your time and muscle, it would be great if you could sign up with me by emailing complexmanager@stmaryscathedral.co.uk Thank you in advance. Alice

Ravelston Fabric Update

You will notice some differences to the sanctuary today following a busy week of works. The upper section of the sanctuary wall has been transformed with the removal of the odd old panelling and the wall painted one, uniform colour – underneath was an array of colours. The new canopy is lower and its beautiful inscription clearer; the large crucifix is higher and more visible. The existing curtains will remain for the time being whilst new curtains are made. The sanctuary overhaul will be completed in due course with new carpets and upholstery, providing a beautiful and worthy space for the celebration of Holy Mass. Also in planning are the next phases of fire safety changes for the church and an overdue refurbishment of the parish rooms.

‘Roamin’ Catholics’ on Pilgrimage: St. Andrew’s Talk Tomorrow 6.45pm

The popular St Andrew’s Talks will return tomorrow! Join Fr Robert and Matthew McCafferty, a seminarian for the archdiocese, for their talk ‘Roamin’ Catholics’ with a look back on the parish Rome pilgrimage from June of this year. The evening will be a whirlwind recap of the places we visited and an insight into some of the other treasures of the Eternal City. Come to Mass at 6pm and then join the talk from 6.45 in the Parish Rooms. Soup and sandwiches will follow afterwards when you can discuss and share your own memories.

Debate and Vote for Rights for Church Representatives Set for 31 August

Councillors are reporting that they have received a lot of our campaign postcards and letters regarding this issue. As you know, Edinburgh City Council is considering a proposal to remove voting rights of Church Representatives on its Education, Children and Families Committee. If passed, it means school reps won’t have a say in decisions affecting faith schools. The debate and vote are now set for 31 August, so there is still time to contact your councillor to help ensure the Church has a voice in Catholic schools. Please send one of the postcards available at the back of the church. Find your councillor: https://www.writetothem.com/

Second Collection This Weekend for African Missions

There will be a second collection this weekend for the African Missions and Holy Places. Thank you for your support of these missions.

Thank you!

There is a lot to be thankful for in these days, but in a particular way a word of gratitude to all those who helped with the organisation and smooth running of the Festival Mass last weekend. We extend our gratitude to so many, from our incredible Schola to the flower arranging and cleaning teams who ensured the Cathedral was in good shape to welcome the Papal Nuncio as well as the many visitors who are in town during the festival. A word of thanks also to the passkeepers, Wojtek and the servers, Deacon Peter and the volunteers who were on hand to see to the professional running of this major event during the Festival that serves to showcase the beauty of the Catholic faith, the great tradition of Christian music and the importance and sanctity of God’s great creation, the human person.

And another thank you!

Hot on the heels of the Festival Mass was the wonderful concert on Monday evening where the Schola Cantorum sang from the vast catalogue of Paul Mealor’s music, whilst he shared fascinating insights into the inspiration for his works. Thank you to all who turned out and supported this special event and for your continued support of the Schola, Michael and Tom and their work to add beauty to our liturgy through the music.

Note from Fr. Patrick

I have now finished my “road show” around the parishes of Edinburgh – which was both interesting and encouraging. Many people from other Edinburgh parishes have already signed up for the Scripture Event – but we are still waiting for the “rush” from Cathedral parishioners!! This week I am in Ravelston to bid farewell to Sr. Mary Pierre who very sadly (for us) is leaving the Diocese for pastures new in Arizona. Then after the Festival Mass next weekend, I will be taking a fortnight of (well earned – Ed!) holiday. I will be back on 31st August at which point, please God, our normal rhythm of life will return at the Cathedral.

There will be Second Collection This Weekend

For Peter’s Pence, The Communications Office and the Day for Life. Thank you!

Cathedral Flower Arranging Team

To ease the burden of the current volunteers and to cover holidays/other absences, we are looking to recruit more volunteers to join our flower arranging teams. There are currently four teams, who meet mid-morning on a Friday and each team is led by an experienced volunteer, so lack of experience is not a barrier if you are interested in providing this ministry. If you would like to join team of flower arrangers, or find out more, please contact Elizabeth Andrews at Elizabeth@rhandrews.plus.com

Farewell to Sr. Mary Pierre Jean

Sr. Mary Pierre (as we call her) has become so much part of our parish and of the Diocese that it is difficult to imagine life here without her. Yet sadly (for us) this is her last week with us before she sets out for pastures new. This is part of the life of a religious Sister, and we understand – but we will still miss her very much. At the end of Mass in St Andrew’s today, there will be a presentation to Sister on behalf of the parish and then please join us for a special Coffee Morning in the Parish Rooms to say goodbye. We will keep Sister in our prayers and pray that she will come back and visit us again in the not-too-distant future.

Each Wednesday 5.00pm Adoration & Confession

Don’t forget to make some time to come before Our Lord in Eucharistic Adoration at St Andrew’s, Ravelston, every Wednesday evening from 5pm. Confession is available too. This is an opportunity to allow yourself some quiet, peaceful time to pray. Prayer before the Blessed Sacrament can take many forms, you might want to pray the rosary or read and meditate on Scripture, it can even just be a brief visit as you pass by. Our Lord is waiting for you, so come and see Him!

BBQ Stall Donations Needed: Book, plant, bric a brac & bottle tombola

In advance of our Parish Barbeque on Sunday 3 September, we are looking for donations for our book stall, plant stall, bric a brac stall and bottle tombola. On the day itself, donations of cakes of all kinds for those who want a slice with a cuppa would be most welcome. For the bottle tombola, donations of anything in a bottle would be gratefully received: wine, whisky, sauce, jam, etc. At the BBQ, draw a number and win anything in a bottle. Donations can be left in the parish room before or after Mass. Alternately speak to Phil, or email philg0dfrey@hotmail.com to arrange collection.......and remember...save the date! Please note: Barbeque starting time will now be 1:30pm, not 12:30pm.

Save the Date: St. Andrew’s Talks Restart in August

The popular St Andrew’s Talks will return in August. The talks will be moving to the last Monday of every month and the first one, on 28th August will be entitled, ‘Roamin’ Catholics’. The talk will be by Fr Robert and Matthew McCafferty, a seminarian for the archdiocese, and will look back on the Rome pilgrimage from June of this year, with a recap of the places we visited and an insight into some of the other treasures of the Eternal City. Come to Mass at 6pm and then join the talk from 6.45 in the Parish Rooms. Soup and sandwiches will follow afterwards when you can discuss and share your own memories.

Voting Rights for Church Representatives

Edinburgh City Council is considering a proposal to remove voting rights of Church Representatives on its Education, Children and Families Committee. If passed, it means school reps won’t have a say in decisions affecting faith schools. The vote on this issue was postponed and is expected to take place in August, so there is still time to contact your councillor to help ensure the Church has a voice in Catholic schools. Postcards are available at the back of the church. Find your councillor: https://www.writetothem.com/

Seventeenth Sunday of Ordinary Time – Year A

Nice Clean Octagon!!

I hope that you will have noticed how wonderfully clean the outside of the Octagon is now – this is because we finally had the stonework cleaned this week and it has made a huge difference. We have also re-sprayed the façade of the Cathedral with fungicide this week. This is about all we are allowed to do to clean the façade – but it has made quite a difference – if you look carefully! The next thing to be tidied up will be the steps in front of the Cathedral. Thank you to all of you whose generous contributions have made this important work possible.
